Biography

Bobbie J. Moon joined Sandberg Phoenix & von Gontard in 2000 as an associate and became a shareholder in 2007. She served as a summer associate for the firm in 1999.

Bobbie practices in the medical malpractice area and concentrates on the defense of hospitals, physicians, nurses and allied health professionals. She has extensive experience in defending catastrophic and complex birth injury cases. She has an interest in hospital nursing policies and procedures, especially in the labor and delivery unit, and how those may impact the defense of a birth injury case. Additionally, Bobbie works as a resource for the firm’s business attorneys when medical issues arise in the context of business litigation.

In addition to her credentials as an attorney, Bobbie also holds licenses as a registered nurse and advanced practice nurse in Missouri and Georgia. She was certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives in 1989 and served for many years as a staff member, team leader and In-patient Coordinator for the Nurse-Midwifery Service of Emory University School of Medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia. At Emory/Grady, she was involved in didactic and clinical education of undergraduate and graduate nursing students, medical students and OB/GYN residents. After moving to St. Louis in 1996, she practiced as a nurse-midwife at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Regional Medical Center and Deaconess (now Forest Park) Hospital. She has delivered more than 600 babies.

For her outstanding work in Health Care Law, Bobbie was selected by her peers as a Best Lawyer for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America in 2017.

Background

Civic Activities
Bobbie serves on the Board of Directors of the Maternal Child and Family Health Coalition. The mission of the coalition is to unite and mobilize key stakeholders in the St. Louis area to improve maternal, child and family health. In addition to her Board role, she also serves on the MCFHC Fetal and Infant Mortality Review team.

Bobbie is an active volunteer with St. Louis Boxer Rescue and usually has more than one “foster” Boxer in her home awaiting adoption. Many weekends she can be seen at various St. Louis area “adoption events” with several Boxers looking for a new home.

Professional Activities
Bobbie is admitted to practice law in Missouri, Illinois, the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Missouri and the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois.

She is a member of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis and was recently invited to join the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance.

She is a Member of Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing; Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Society; Order of the Woolsack and the American College of Nurse Midwives.

Bobbie plays an active role in mentoring young associate attorneys and is a member of the firm’s Associate Committee Board. She also serves on the Recruiting Committee.

Education
Bobbie earned her Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, and Certificate in Health Law, from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2000.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1986 and a Master of Nursing, with honors, in 1989 from Emory University, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing.

Successes

Litigation Experience
Avichail v. St. John’s Mercy Medical Center. This pediatric medical malpractice action was tried in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri in October 2010. Bobbie served as second chair assisting Kenneth Bean. After seven days of trial the jury returned a defense verdict after two hours of deliberation.

Swain v. Mercy Medical Group. Bobbie served as second chair assisting Kenneth Bean in this neonatal wrongful death action tried to a St. Charles County jury in February 2010. The jury returned a defense verdict after a four day trial.

Dilworth v. Barnes-Jewish Hospital.Bobbie tried this gynecological surgery medical malpractice action in St. Louis City in May 2009. The jury returned a defense verdict in just over two hours of deliberation following a three day trial. Bobbie also represented the hospital in response to plaintiff’s appeal of the verdict and the defense verdict was upheld by the Court of Appeals in June 2010.

Stuck v. St. John’s Mercy Medical Center. This obstetrical malpractice action was tried in St. Louis County in September 2008 by Kenneth Bean with Bobbie serving as second chair. The child had devastating neurological injuries. We received a defense verdict after a ten day trial.
