Biography

Sandberg Phoenix Counsel Carl Lothman joined the firm in 2013, as part of the joining of forces with Helfrey, Neiers and Jones. As a member of the Business Practice Group, Carl’s practice spans more than 30 years, and focuses on helping business clients in the healthcare, construction, manufacturing and service industries, as well as assisting individuals in developing and implementing estate planning goals and strategies. For many clients, Carl functions as an “outside General Counsel,” providing insight and strategic support on an ongoing basis.

He is experienced in a wide variety of contractual matters, including employment, non-compete, service, licensing, purchases and sales, leasing, and many others. Carl works closely with clients to develop effective, cost sensitive, strategies in areas such as advanced estate planning ideas, post death trust administration and probate procedures, real estate solutions, business taxes, business and non-profit governance and compliance, employee benefits, and succession planning. Throughout his many years of practice, Carl has been able to work in many interesting areas of law.

“Being able to meet and work with clients from widely varied backgrounds is interesting, rewarding – and challenging,” Carl says. “I thoroughly enjoy meeting new people and helping them achieve their goals.”

Carl’s wealth of experience has taught him to resist jumping to conclusions, because every client’s circumstances and stage in life is different and requires a different approach to addressing their specific legal needs. By listening closely and establishing objectives, he is able to help strategize a comprehensive plan for his clients, leading to long-term success, rather than short term problem solving.

“One of my favorite parts of practicing law is meeting with people and tackling their problems one-on-one,” says Carl.

In his free time, Carl enjoys traveling with his wife to visit his grown children and to explore national parks. He can often be found working on projects around his St. Louis area home or in the garden. Carl also enjoys running to work off his passion for fine foods, as well as reading a good book.

Background

Receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Missouri – Columbia, Carl then studied law, also at Mizzou, and earned his Juris Doctorate. Later in his career, he went back to school, earning his LLM in Taxation from Washington University in St. Louis.

Carl is a member of the American Bar Association and their sections on Taxation, Business Law, Real Property, Trust and Estates, Probate and Trust Law, Health Law and Construction Law. He’s also a member of the Missouri Bar Association and their Construction, Taxation, Trusts and Estates Sections, as well as the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, where he is a member of the Employee Benefits and Small Business Committees. He has previously served as a member of the St. Louis County Bar Association Executive Committee and Legal Services of Eastern Missouri Board of Directors. Carl previously served as General Counsel for the St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners.
