Bringing years of experience as an Assistant Attorney General and associate at a firm in Springfield Illinois, Geri Lynn Arrindell joined Sandberg Phoenix in 2013. Her expertise in employment law and governmental affairs and regulations, in addition to her experience practicing before the National Labor Relations Board and Illinois Labor Relations Board, adds significant capability to the Business litigation Practice Group.

“In my practice, I see firsthand the need for employment law attorneys to approach situations with a collaborative framework in mind to arrive at plausible and sustainable outcomes,” Geri Lynn says.

Geri Lynn is proactive when working with clients, delving deep into their business’s current situation and the competitive landscape to solve not only the present issue, but prevent future problems from arising. She believes that listening and learning are the keys to understanding how to maximize each situation for her clients, whether the goal is a quick resolution or a prolonged effort to preserve integrity.

“I love my job,” says Geri Lynn, “and getting to meet a variety of new people and learn about their businesses is intriguing and motivates me to fight hard on their behalf.”

Away from the office, Geri Lynn loves to travel, both domestically and internationally, and learn about new cultures. She and her husband attend their son and daughter’s sporting events and make family trips to local art fairs, museums and community events. Geri Lynn also enjoys a variety of musical genres and diving into a new book. She adores the family’s Jack Russell Terrier mix, who was adopted from the Animal Protective League.

Background

Geri Lynn earned a Bachelor of Social Work, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Clark Atlanta University, where she served as the President of the Organization for Social Change and as a Student Ambassador. She was also honored with membership in the Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society and as the School of Social Work Outstanding Student. Following her undergraduate degree, Geri Lynn received her master’s degree in social work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received a Graduate Student Merit Assistantship and was a part of the Advance Standing Graduate Program.

Geri Lynn earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Illinois, College of Law. While at the College of Law, she received several scholarships, participated in various Moot Court, Client Counseling and Negotiation competitions and was a member of the College of Law Trial Team. She also served as Secretary and Vice President of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Mediator for the Office of Student Conflict Resolution and as a member of the Illinois State Bar and American Bar Associations and the Black Law Students Association.

Prior to her legal career, Geri Lynn served as Director of Program Services for the Community-Based Division of The Hope Institute for Children and Families in Springfield, Illinois. She developed the agency’s community-based group homes for children with developmental delays and oversaw the division’s daily operations, annual budget, drafted policies and procedures for client care and risk management, met with and organized parental and community stakeholder sessions and served on the agency’s initial management and labor negotiation team.

From 2014-2016, Geri Lynn was recognized by Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers as a Rising Star after receiving the same recognition in Illinois in 2013.

Geri Lynn is a current member of the American Bar Association, the National Bar Association, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, the Mound City Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association, where she serves on the Judicial Evaluation Committee Outside Cook County, and a former member of the Assembly and Labor & Employment Committee. Additionally, Geri Lynn is a member of DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar and currently serves on the DRI Diversity to Success Conference Planning Committee.

She is licensed to practice law in Illinois and Missouri, and also holds an Illinois license as a clinical social worker.

Community and corporate engagement is also very important to Geri Lynn, who has worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Sangamon County Juvenile Probation, the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, the Springfield Urban League and the Illinois Women’s Institute for Leadership. She was also a member of the Springfield, Illinois Mayor’s Leadership 2020 Strategic Planning team and served as a Board of Directors member of the Leadership Springfield Association.  Geri Lynn also previously served on the Sangamon County Citizens Survey Committee and on the Board of Directors for the Memorial Medical Center Foundation.

Recent Successes

Motions for Summary Judgment Granted:
State employee sued employer and supervisor for race discrimination and summary judgment was granted in the Central District of IL.

Employee sued a small business owner for age discrimination and summary judgment was granted in the Central District of IL. The employer was able to show that the employees termination was due to a reduction in force that was necessitate by economic hardship caused by the economic crisis of 2008. The matter was then appealed the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and attorney Arrindell played an integral role in having the matter settled for a fraction of the cost plaintiff requested to the insurance companies delight.

Federal Jury Trial:
Successfully represented correctional officers against claims of unlawful conditions of confinement to a jury verdict in the Central District of IL before Judge Baker.

Successfully represented correctional officers in a Section 1983 civil rights lawsuit alleging excessive use of force. The jury trial was held in the Central District of IL before Magistrate Judge Cudmore.

Mediation Success:
Represented a court appointed plaintiff in an employment discrimination case against his employer, a fast food franchise. The plaintiff settled his lawsuit and attorney Arrindell helped bring this pro-bono matter to a quick resolution.

Arbitration Success:
Successfully defended a non-profit organization in a grievance arbitration in which a employee’s suspension and discharge was upheld. Attorney Arrindell was able to successfully argue that the suspension was an acceptable past practice and that the employer had just cause to terminate the employee.

National Labor Relations Board Successes:
Successfully defended a non-profit organization against over 30 unfair labor practice charges filed by a union in the midst of a union organizing campaign and the negotiation of the organizations first collective bargaining agreement.
