Melanie Riley, Associate

Biography

Melanie joined Sandberg Phoenix in 2011 as an associate, and she is a member of the Products Liability Practice Group. She focuses her practice on the defense of manufacturers, suppliers, and premises owners in asbestos, benzene, and other toxic/mass tort and environmental litigation. She is involved in all aspects of case strategy, including written, oral, and expert discovery, as well as settlement and trial preparation. Melanie strives to limit clients’ potential exposure and liability by providing proactive and cost-effective solutions.

Dedicated to achieving the optimal result in each case, Melanie strives to be accessible and dependable, allowing her clients to get back to business as usual as she works on their behalf.

“I really enjoy solving problems,” Melanie says, “And by working with clients proactively, I can even help them prevent issues from occurring.”

Outside her legal career, Melanie enjoys playing with her poodle/bichon mix, traveling abroad and volunteering at various organizations throughout St. Louis.

Background

Melanie earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, summa cum laude, from Saint Louis University in 2005. She went on to receive her Juris Doctor, Certificate in Health Law, and Certificate in Employment Law from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2008. During law school, she served as Staff Editor on the Journal of Health Law and Lead Editor on the Journal of Health Law and Policy. She also assisted two health law professors with legal research and drafting textbooks as a Faculty Fellow.

Prior to joining Sandberg Phoenix, Melanie practiced for several years with a defense firm in Edwardsville, Illinois.

She is a member of the American Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, Madison County Bar Association, the Missouri Bar, the Lawyers Association of St. Louis, Missouri, and the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis.  She also serves on the firm’s Charitable Efforts and Wellness Committees.

Melanie serves on the Board of Directors of ALIVE (Alternatives to Living in Violent Environments) and is a volunteer for the Missouri Botanical Garden.

In recognition of her outstanding work as a young attorney, Melanie was selected as a “Rising Star” by Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers in 2016.

Melanie is licensed to practice in Missouri, Illinois, and the United States District Courts for the Southern District of Illinois and Eastern District of Missouri.
