Biography

Natalie Kussart joined Sandberg Phoenix & von Gontard in September of 2007 as an associate after working for the firm as a summer associate in 2006 and as a law clerk from 2005 to 2007. Working with the Business Litigation and Products Liability Practice Groups, Natalie has experience in class actions, commercial and construction litigation, personal injury and tort defense, product and toxic tort liability, professional liability, medical malpractice defense, arbitration and mediation, and appellate work. Throughout her career, she has represented trucking and bus companies, hospitals, physicians, banks, mortgage providers, and manufacturers of automobiles, consumer products, heavy machinery, medical devices, recreational products, and drugs/pharmaceuticals.

Sharing Sandberg Phoenix’s focus on superior client service, Natalie prides herself on responding to client inquiries quickly and achieving the best possible result for her clients. She is committed to defending her clients effectively and efficiently.

Outside her legal practice, Natalie enjoys spending time with her family, taking walks, reading, watching movies, and traveling to warm destinations.

Background

In 2002, Natalie graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Millikin University before earning her Master of Arts in Communication from Illinois State University in 2004. In addition to her graduate coursework, Natalie taught six public speaking courses at Illinois State University, oversaw all teaching assistants in the Communications Department and was nominated as an Outstanding University Graduate Teacher.  For her dedication and excellence, she was awarded the International Communication Association’s award for Outstanding Graduate Teacher.

She went on to earn her Juris Doctor, summa cum laude, graduating second in her class from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 2007. While in law school, Natalie was a staff writer for the Southern Illinois University Law Journal and served as Comment/Casenote Editor during her final year of law school. She also received the Award for Academic Excellence and Phi Kappa Phi Award.

Natalie is a member of the Missouri Bar Association, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, Defense Research Institute (DRI), and the Missouri Trucking Association. At Sandberg Phoenix, she serves as the chair of the Technology Committee and as a member of the Trucking Subcommittee, Recruiting Committee, and Summer Associate Management Committee.

She was named as a Rising Star by Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers in 2009, 2014-2016.

Natalie is admitted to practice law in the states of Missouri and Illinois, the United States District Court of the Eastern District of Missouri, and the United States District Court of the Southern District of Illinois.

Successes

Tuttle v. STERIS Corp. March 2014 – Natalie won summary judgment for her client in a contentious products liability case.

Burbridge v. Harsco Corporation, et al., March 2012 – Natalie assisted in trying and won a defense verdict in a case involving a train conductor alleging permanent eye injuries from shattered glass from a train accident.
