Biography

A firm shareholder with more than a decade of experience, Sara Obermark focuses her practice primarily on medical malpractice litigation and business litigation. Handling health law matters including state board disciplinary proceedings, professional liability and medical malpractice cases, Sara works with hospitals, physicians, nurses, health and wellness centers, home health agencies and senior living facilities. She is also highly experienced in business litigation matters, working with many small- and medium-sized enterprises on breach of contract actions, personal injury, premises liability, homeowner & condo association issues. A recognized leader in the firm, Sara serves as Chair of the firm’s Recruiting Committee.

“I believe it’s extremely important to listen to each client, and to understand their priorities and objectives. Being clear on how a client defines success is the key to meeting and exceeding client expectations,” Sara says. “And by taking the time to completely understand my clients, I’m better able to bring the firm’s ideal resources to serve each client. I also do everything possible to view each client’s situation through their eyes, which means not only achieving objectives, but doing so with excellent client service and a cost effective approach to handling matters.”

Sara also enjoys getting to know her clients personally, and while maintaining an easygoing attitude with clients, she is an assertive advocate for them, pursuing their best interests with passion and determination. “My philosophy – and the firm’s – is that it’s important to develop a partnership with each client,” Sara says.

Background

Attending Southwest Missouri State University, Sara earned her Bachelor of Science in Education, with honors, in 2001. Following graduation, she taught for the Cape Girardeau Missouri Public Schools.

Sara soon went on to graduate with her Juris Doctor from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 2005.

She is a member of the Missouri Bar Association and Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. Sara also serves as a member of the Sandberg Phoenix Recruiting and Wellness Committees, and on the firm’s Women’s Forum.

In recognition of her outstanding work as a young attorney, Sara was selected as a “Rising Star” by Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers in 2015.

She is licensed to practice law in Missouri, Illinois and Kansas.

Successes

Wuelling v SSM Health Care St. Louis, et al. Circuit Court of St. Louis County. This was a medical malpractice case in which plaintiff alleged the defendants failed to appropriately recognize and treat a period of low blood pressure which resulted in an infarction of the plaintiff’s spinal cord leading to quadriplegia.  Defense verdict.

Newbound v Kitchens, et al. Circuit Court of St. Louis County. This was a medical malpractice/wrongful death case in which plaintiff alleged the defendans failed to timely treat a hematoma.  Defense verdict.

Sara B. Obermark joined Sandberg Phoenix & von Gontard in 2005, after serving as a summer legal clerk at the Sandberg Phoenix Carbondale office in 2004. She focuses her practice primarily on medical malpractice litigation and business litigation.
