Choosing a Divorce Attorney: What to Do and What to Avoid

December 18, 2023

When you are thinking about filing for divorce, choosing an attorney to represent you can be one of the most important decisions you can make. So what you should do, and avoid doing, when choosing an attorney?

  1. Meet with more than one person. Different attorneys have different styles, personalities, and ways they approach divorces. You should feel comfortable and confident in your attorney, and meeting with more than one person can make it clear who you want to choose.
  2. Be honest about the issues in your divorce. Attorneys are only able to give you their opinion if they are aware of all of the facts- whether you think they can help or harm your case. Providing the attorney with the full scope of the issues will allow them to give you a better sense of possible outcomes in the divorce.
  3. Don’t base your choice just based on what you read online. Divorce can be an emotionally difficult process, so reading the “reviews” of an attorney online can be misleading. People sometimes write reviews of the other attorney, despite being told they have to have been represented by the person. Other people write a review based on their disappointment in the current laws, and not on the skills of the lawyer. Basing your opinion only on reviews can lead you to miss out on good counsel.
