Not all divorces need to be knock-down-drag-out fights costing thousands of dollars in fees and placing the post-divorce relationship of the parents in jeopardy. There are ways to help ensure that, after the divorce is over and the attorneys are gone, your coparenting relationship with your ex can start off on the right path.
So, what is the best way to keep things amicable during a divorce? The first step is usually to discuss that goal with your attorney. I often ask my clients to discuss issues with me before reaching out to the other parent, so that I can review with them not just what they want to say, but how they want to say it. Having an attorney means having someone who can help you address issues cordially, taking the emotion out of the communication. Removing that emotion and being able to communicate with the other parent in a respectful manner, is a good step in allowing you to have clear and effective discussions after the divorce is over.
