Kurt S. Odenwald, Judge (retired)

Senior Counsel

Kurt Odenwald joined Sandberg Phoenix in 2025 as a key member of the firm’s Business Litigation Practice Group, bringing a distinguished career spanning over four decades in private practice, public service, and the judiciary. A lifelong resident of St. Louis, Kurt served on the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Eastern District of Missouri from 2007 to 2024, including as Chief Judge from 2011 to 2012. His tenure on the bench provided him with unparalleled insight into appellate advocacy, judicial decision-making, and the intricacies of the legal system—perspectives that now serve as invaluable assets to the firm and its clients.

Drawing on his extensive judicial experience, Kurt plays a pivotal role in mentoring attorneys, refining litigation strategies, and strengthening appellate arguments. His work includes conducting mock arguments, reviewing briefs, and collaborating with the firm’s appellate team to ensure the strongest possible representation for clients. His ability to assess cases from a judicial viewpoint provides a unique advantage in litigation and appeals, helping attorneys anticipate court perspectives and enhance their advocacy.

Kurt’s comprehensive understanding and skills as an effective litigator, strong client advocate and a highly respected appellate judge afford parties considering mediation or arbitration as an alternative to litigation an exceptional opportunity to successfully resolve their claims.

Before his appointment to the Court of Appeals, Kurt built a successful 23-year career in private practice, specializing in complex business litigation. His earlier roles as an Assistant Public Defender for the City of St. Louis and as Associate General Counsel with Anheuser-Busch, Inc. provided him with a well-rounded foundation in both trial work and corporate legal strategy.

Kurt’s leadership extends beyond the courtroom. From 1990 to 2006, he served as an elected member of the St. Louis County Council, representing the Fifth County Council District and twice serving as Chairman. His experience in government and policy further strengthens his ability to navigate regulatory challenges and advocate for clients in high-stakes matters. Since 2008, he has also shared his expertise as an Adjunct Professor at Lindenwood University, teaching graduate courses in business law and shaping the next generation of legal professionals.

A dedicated scholar of the law, Kurt was awarded a prestigious fellowship in 1984 to study German law by the Deutsche Akademischer Austauschdienst and the Ministry of Justice of Nord-Rhein Westfalen. His passion for legal education and cultural heritage continues to influence both his professional and personal life.

Outside of work, Kurt and his wife, Sandy, enjoy spending time with their four children, two granddaughters, and their beloved four dogs—three long-haired mini-dachshunds and their daughter’s cherished rescue, Murphy. Deeply connected to his German heritage, Kurt serves as Chairman and chief cook of St. Michael’s annual Oktoberfest, bringing people together through tradition and community.
