Matthew Fields

Matthew Fields is a seasoned trial attorney with extensive experience in complex litigation. As a counsel at Sandberg Phoenix, he focuses his practice on the defense of asbestos and toxic tort litigation, products liability, professional liability, insurance, and commercial litigation. With a proven track record in the courtroom, Matthew has served as lead counsel in multiple jury trials in various capacities, including first-chair, co-first chair, and second-chair roles.

For nearly two decades, Matthew has represented businesses of all sizes, defending claims involving asbestos exposure through products, premises, contractors, suppliers, and employers. He has successfully litigated cases throughout Missouri and Illinois, including obtaining a directed verdict at the close of the plaintiff’s evidence in Madison County, IL, protecting a family-owned business from liability in an asbestos trial.

Beyond toxic torts, Matthew has successfully handled matters involving personal injury, products liability, premises liability, insurance coverage, corporate law, contractual disputes, real estate transactions, employment issues, professional liability, legal malpractice, and class actions. His litigation experience spans both state and federal courts, where he has secured significant victories, including a multi-million-dollar judgment in a contractual and fraud dispute, a defense verdict in a high-stakes uninsured motorist case, and a $1 million judgment for breach of fiduciary duty and fraud.

Matthew also has extensive experience defending professionals, including architects, contractors, engineers, and attorneys, against claims of professional liability. Notably, he successfully defended a Construction Manager against claims related to high school bleachers in a slip and fall case where the plaintiff sought damages exceeding $1 million. He has also represented attorneys in legal malpractice claims and disciplinary matters before the Illinois Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission and the Missouri Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel.
