Do I Have to Share the Holidays with My Ex?

When parents are divorced, the question may arise as to whether they should celebrate the holidays together with the children. The answer is: it depends. Some families have very amicable relationships that allow them to spend time together, celebrating holidays and special occasions, often with extended family included. Other families do not get along as well and having both parents in the same area causes tension that can be felt by everyone, including the children.

In Missouri, a divorce with children includes a parenting plan that sets out who has the children for each holiday and special day. The plan includes language that the parents can agree to something other than what is in the plan; but if they cannot agree, the parenting plan is a court order that should be followed.

Making decisions about holiday schedules and celebrations is just one item your family law attorney should discuss with you. For this or other family law questions, please reach out to one of the attorneys at Sandberg Phoenix.
